Hot Pot Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Food Warmer for Your Home (UAE)

Hot pot set – Souk Al Ras buying guide

A good hot pot keeps rice, machboos, harees or bread hot from the moment it leaves the stove until the last guest has eaten. A poor one cools down within an hour, or worse, lets food seep behind the inner bowl. At Souk Al Ras we sell more than 200 hot pots, insulated casseroles and buffet food warmers, and our customers ask us the same five questions every day. This guide answers all of them, so you can choose the right one the first time.

Quick answer

  • Heat: a quality insulated hot pot keeps food hot for up to around 6 hours (some premium models 6–8 hours) when it is pre-warmed and kept closed.
  • Size: a 3-piece set of 1L + 1.5L + 2L suits a family of up to 5 at breakfast, or 3–4 people at lunch. Bigger families and gatherings need 2.5L–5L pieces or a 4L–8L buffet warmer.
  • Hygiene: choose a stainless steel inner bowl that is one sealed piece up to the rim, so no food or liquid can get between the bowl and the body.
  • Lid: a glass lid lets you see the food without opening it and losing heat.
  • Origin: most of our hot pots are made in India by well-known brands, with some made in Turkey. We do not sell copies.

1. How long does a hot pot keep food hot?

An insulated hot pot does not heat food. It slows down heat loss with a double wall: a stainless steel inner bowl, an insulating layer (usually PU foam) and an outer body. Most good-quality hot pots keep food hot for up to around 6 hours. Some premium models, such as the patented Pilsco sets, are rated for 6–8 hours.

How long yours actually lasts depends on how you use it:

  • Pre-warm it. Pour hot water in for 5 minutes, then empty it before adding the food. A cold bowl steals heat from your food.
  • Fill it well. A full hot pot holds heat much longer than a half-empty one. Choose the size that matches the amount you cook.
  • Keep the lid closed. Every time you open it, heat escapes. This is why many customers prefer a glass lid.
  • Add food piping hot, straight from the pot or oven.

2. What size hot pot do I need?

This is the question we are asked most. Use the table below as a starting point. It is based on what our customers in the UAE tell us after using their sets at home and in the majlis.

Size Best for Typical use
1L – 1.5L 1–2 people, or side dishes Sauces, salona, beans, eggs, bread
2L – 3L 3–5 people Rice, curry, harees, main dish
3.5L – 5L 5–8 people Machboos, biryani, family lunch
5.5L – 10L 8–15+ people Gatherings, Ramadan iftar, buffet
10L – 16L Large events Weddings, majlis, catering

Sizes are approximate and depend on portion size and how many dishes you serve.

Our most popular choice: a 3-piece set of 1L + 1.5L + 2L. It feeds a family of up to 5 at breakfast, or about 3–4 people at lunch. For bigger families, look at the "Mega" and "Jumbo" sets, which come in sizes such as 2.5L + 3.5L + 5L, or 5.5L + 7.5L + 10L.

3. Sealed inner bowl: the hygiene check most people miss

Before you buy, check the inside of the hot pot. In a good hot pot, the stainless steel inner bowl is one piece and sealed all the way up to the rim. This matters because:

  • food and liquid cannot leak into the gap between the inner bowl and the outer body;
  • nothing gets trapped where you cannot clean it, so there is no smell over time;
  • it is easier to wash and stays hygienic for years.

Food-grade stainless steel is the material to look for on the inside. It does not change the taste of food and does not absorb smells.

4. Glass lid or solid lid?

Many of our customers prefer a glass lid, because you can see what is inside without opening it, and every opening lets heat escape. Some sets, such as 9-piece sets, give you both: each hot pot comes with a glass lid for serving and a plastic lid for storing or carrying. Remember that the piece count of a set includes lids: a 9-piece set is 3 hot pots, each with 2 lids.

5. Where are the hot pots made?

Most of the hot pots we sell are made in India, by brands with a long track record for insulated casseroles in the Gulf, such as Jaypee, Royalford and YARIS. Some come from Turkey. Every brand we sell is original: we do not sell copies or non-original brands.

6. Family hot pot or buffet food warmer?

There are two main types:

  • Family hot pots (hot pot sets and single hot pots): usually 1L–5L, for daily meals at home. Easy to carry to the table.
  • Buffet food warmers (buffet warmers & chafing dishes): usually 6L–10L and above, often on a stand with gold or silver detailing. Used for big family gatherings, Ramadan, Eid and weddings, and many families also use them at home for large meals.

If you serve rice on large trays, see our kozi and rice serving dishes.

7. Design: matching your majlis

Hot pots are often on the table in front of guests, so design matters. You can choose plain colours, wood-effect, marble-effect handles, floral designs, hammered or embossed metal, and gold or silver finishes. Choose one design family for the whole table: a matching set always looks more generous than mixed pieces.

8. Care tips to make your hot pot last

  • Wash the inner bowl by hand with warm water and a soft sponge. Avoid steel wool.
  • Do not put the outer body in water or in the dishwasher, unless the product says it is dishwasher safe.
  • Do not cook in a hot pot or put it on a stove or in an oven. It keeps food hot; it does not heat it.
  • Only use a microwave if the product is clearly marked microwave safe (we stock microwave-safe options).
  • Dry it fully with the lid open before storing, to keep it fresh.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hot pot keep food hot?

A quality insulated hot pot keeps food hot for up to around 6 hours, and some premium models for 6–8 hours. Pre-warm it with hot water, fill it well and keep the lid closed to get the longest heat retention.

What size hot pot do I need for a family of 5?

A 3-piece set of 1L + 1.5L + 2L suits a family of up to 5 for breakfast. For lunch or bigger appetites, choose a larger set such as 2L + 3L + 5L.

What is the difference between a hot pot and a food warmer?

Both keep food hot with insulation. "Hot pot" usually means a family-size insulated casserole (1L–5L), while "food warmer" or "buffet warmer" usually means a larger 6L–10L+ server for gatherings.

Can I cook in a hot pot?

No. A hot pot is for keeping cooked food hot. Do not put it on a stove or in an oven.

Are hot pots safe for food?

Yes, when the inner bowl is food-grade stainless steel. Choose one where the inner bowl is a single sealed piece up to the rim, so food cannot get behind it.

Where are your hot pots made?

Most of our hot pots are made in India, and some in Turkey. All our brands are original: we do not sell copies or non-original brands.

Do you deliver hot pots across the UAE?

Yes. We deliver to all emirates in 1–2 working days, with same-day delivery available in Dubai and Sharjah for orders placed before 2 PM (arranged with our team on WhatsApp).
